Textron Aviation recently received a Federal Aviation Administration supplemental type certification (STC) for a data communications upgrade to Hawker 4000 business jets. Textron says the upgrade will simplify pilot communications with air traffic control.

Specifically, the upgrade will add a Future Air Navigation System (FANS) and a Protected Mode Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (PM-CPDLC) program to Hawker 4000s equipped with the Honeywell Primus Epic cockpit.

Pilot Benefits

Textron began developing this program in 2021 and says it enables planes to use the most current Data Link services offered in North America and Europe. Brian Rohloff, Textron Aviation’s senior vice president of customer support, says the result is less work for pilots.

“Our team is committed to supporting customers throughout their ownership experience, and we made this option available through our global service network based on their feedback,” he says.

Ongoing Hawker 4000 Support

Textron Aviation discontinued the Hawker 4000 in 2013, but the super-midsize jet remains a viable choice for business jet customers. Introduced in 1996 as the Hawker Horizon, the Hawker 4000 first flew in 2001. The aircraft received FAA final certification in 2006.

Dual Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308A engines power the jet, which can seat eight to 12 passengers in a typical configuration. The Hawker 4000’s maximum speed tops Mach 0.80, and its flight range surpasses 3,000 nautical miles (5,556 kilometers).

Program Features

FANS 1/A+ and PM-CPDLC program installation is available at select domestic Textron Aviation service facilities. The company operates 20 fully equipped facilities worldwide, providing factory-direct support, maintenance, and modifications.

A few program features worth noting include the ability to load complex instructions quickly and accurately into the aircraft flight management program with the push of a button. The program also enables better re-routing around severe weather events and traffic congestion and provides future support for FAA NextGen Data Comm program capabilities.
