GE Aviation recently awarded Japan Airlines a technical license to use GE’s 360 Foam Wash jet engine cleaning system on its CF34-8E aircraft engines. Japan Airlines is the world’s first CF34 engine operator and first regional jet operator to receive the license. The commercial carrier received the license following technology testing and equipment training, and will be able to have their technicians perform 360 Foam Wash on their own to maintain the CF34-8E engines that power the Embraer 170 fleet owned and operated by J-Air, a Japan Airlines subsidiary.

About 360 Foam Wash

The system was designed in response to observations that very fine particulate dust was getting “baked on” the cores of engines, resulting in a loss of fuel efficiency and that water wash techniques were not effective enough. GE’s 360 Foam Wash, an alternative to water wash, helps restore engine performance which will reduce fuel consumption and improve time on wing. The foam wash works by injecting a specially formulated proprietary solution, which can lower engine exhaust temperatures and improve engine compressor efficiency. The 360 Foam Wash system is self-contained to allow for use both inside maintenance hangars and outdoors. It is approved for use on multiple GE engines, including models of GE90, GEnx, CF34 and CF6.

GE estimates that using the 360 Foam Wash to replace some water washes on CF34 engines will potentially save Japan Airlines up to 82,000 liters of fuel and up to 285 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.

“GE’s 360 Foam Wash system helps us to reduce CO2 emissions,” says Ryo Tamura, senior vice president of Japan Airlines Engineering & Maintenance. “This system is part of Japan Airline’s ESG management, where we look to maintain the airplane in a way to reduce the impact on the environment.”
