Gulfstream Aerospace recently announced several enhancements for its super-midsize G280 business jet designed to improve the passenger experience, provide a streamlined pilot workload, and deliver additional safety benefits.

For starters, the manufacturer is making a plasma ionization clean-air system available for the aircraft, that Gulfstream says has proven in lab tests to neutralize pathogens and allergens, complementing the 100%-fresh air cabin environment the G280 already provides. Other upgrades include numerous avionics upgrades and an increase to the aircraft’s vertical separation minimum validation intervals from 24 to 96 months. Additionally, the G280’s Controller-Pilot Datalink Communication (CPDLC) is now FANS-E (Future Air Navigation System)-compliant.

A Safer G280

G280 owners opting for a V3.6.1 avionics upgrade have access to a number of new avionics features that will lessen pilots’ workloads. Items of note include SiriusXM graphical weather with real-time updates, dual electronic charts that let pilots create a paperless flight deck, and a surface management system (SMS) that alerts pilots with aural and visual cues to unsafe ground and arrival operations to help prevent runway incursions. The avionics upgrade also provides access to vertical weather and predictive wind shear data meant to give pilots sufficient time to avoid in-flight weather issues.

The G280 Up Close

The G280 entered service in 2012, and Gulfstream says more than 220 are now in operation worldwide. In March, Gulfstream announced that the jet had been certified to meet intensified noise standards classified as Stage 5 by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). That standard took effect in December 2020, and is applicable to various aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 121,254 pounds (55,000 kilograms) or less.

The G280 can be configured for up to two living areas and comes with Gulfstream’s exclusive cabin management system, 19 large oval windows, and high-speed Ka-band satellite network connectivity. The jet is available in 10-passenger, 10-passenger with Divan, nine-passenger, and eight-passenger seating configurations. It’s certified for steep-approach operations and short-field takeoffs and landings, and includes the Gulfstream PlaneView280 flight deck, the Enhanced Flight Vision System, and a Synthetic Vision-Primary Display featuring 3D graphics of terrain and runways. The aircraft is equipped with two Honeywell HTF7250G engines and has a 3,600-nautical-mile (6,667-kilometer) flight range and a maximum speed of Mach 0.85.
