Already the winner of a 2020 Aerokurier Innovation Award in the best new aircraft category, the new, single-engine DA50 RG (retractable gear) from Diamond Aircraft is now also the winner of a 2021 iF Design Award in the Product discipline. The five-seat, all-carbon fiber plane was launched in June 2020 and received its European Union Aviation Safety (EASA) type certification in September. Diamond Aircraft expects the DA50 RG to receive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification by year’s end.

A World Of Interest

The iF Design Awards are now in their 67th year. An international jury of nearly 100 design experts selected 2021’s winners from nearly 10,000 entries from 52 countries in nine disciplines. Diamond Aircraft Austria CEO Liqun (Frank) Zhang says Diamond is honored by all the attention the DA50 RG has attracted.

“Since introduction, this aircraft has sparked so much interest all over the world, and everyone who flies it is excited about the comfortable roomy cabin, the superb workmanship, and the fantastic flight characteristics,” Zhang says.

The DA50 RG provides one of the widest and most comfortable cabins in its class, says Diamond, which touts the aircraft’s roomy, limousine-like interior and remarkable handling. In addition to its all-carbon fiber composition construction, the DA50 RG boasts hinged double-slotted flaps that Diamond says give the plane high lift and superior slow-speed behavior.

DA50 RG ABCs

The DA50 RG is a member of the DA50 program Diamond Aircraft introduced in 2017. Diamond later partnered with Continental on the DA50 RG’s twin-turbocharged, liquid-cooled, six-cylinder 300-horsepower (224-kilowatt) Continental CD-300 jet-fuel engine, which features a dual-redundant FADEC (full authority digital engine control) system. The aircraft comes with a Garmin G1000 NXi flight deck and is rated for a maximum speed of 181 KTAS and a 750-nautical-mile (1,389-kilometer) range.
