A Closer Look At Dassault Aviation’s Falcon 6X Long-Range Business Twinjet

Dassault Aviation says its upcoming 16-passenger Falcon 6X business jet will be the “most spacious, advanced, and versatile twinjet in business aviation.” The jet is set to begin test fights next year and enter service in 2022. (Photo courtesy of Dassault Aviation.)

Dassault Aviation claims a “legendary aircraft heritage”—one that dates to WWI when Marcel Dassault founded the company in France. Dassault designs, manufacturers, sells, and services both business and combat aircraft—the latter including Rafale fighter jets. Considering its history and 10,000-plus aircraft deliveries to 90 countries to date, Dassault’s claim that the “passenger- and pilot-centric” Falcon 6X “reflects the ultimate evolution” of its heritage is saying quite something. Here’s a closer look at the upcoming Falcon 6X long-range business jet.

The 6X At Large

Dassault entered the civil aircraft sector in the 1960s with the Falcon 20. The Falcon lineup today includes the 6X, 7X, 8X, 900LX, 2000LXS, and 2000S models. Introduced in 2018, the 6X is billed as the “most spacious, advanced, and versatile twinjet in business aviation.” Dassault has already built a 6X full-scale cabin mockup, and it expects test flights to begin early next year with deliveries set for 2022. When it enters service, the 6X will pair class-leading range with short-field and “short hop and go” abilities, the latter meaning the 6X can land at an interim airport, pick up passengers, and continue to an overseas destination without refueling.

Twin Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW812D engines will support the 6X’s leading 5,500-nautical-mile (10,186-kilometer) range at Mach 0.80 with eight passengers and three crew members. At Mach 0.85, range dips to 5,100 nm (9,445 km). The aircraft’s top speed is Mach 0.90. The 16-passenger 6X will come equipped with a third-generation EASy Flight Deck, feature an “ultra-efficient wing” that Dassault says will reduce turbulence impact, and be the first business jet to use flaperons. The latter are described as “active high-speed deflection control surfaces” that help enhance control in low-speed situations.

With 6.5 ft (1.98 m) of headroom and measuring 8.5 ft (2.58 m) wide, the 6X’s cabin offers the most interior space in the 5,000-nm segment and the widest cross-section of any purpose-built jet, Dassault claims. Customer input and Dassault’s in-house Design Studio helped completely rethink and restyle the interior with “flowing, uninterrupted lines that enhance the feeling of spaciousness,” Dassault says. Passengers will find a 5-inch (12.7-centimeter) wider cabin aisle than in previous Falcon models, as well as multiple cabin configurations (large entryway, crew rest area, and rear lounge), 30 extra-large windows, the industry’s first skylight, and high-speed Ka-Band network connectivity options.
