Bombardier’s new Global 5500 and Global 6500 business jets are now primed for operation in Canada following their receipt of Transport Canada Type Certifications in late September. Bombardier expects the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) to soon award certifications, as well. Announced in 2018, the Global 5500 and 6500 join a Global lineup that also includes the 5000, 6000, 7500, and 8000 models.
“Superior Safety”
With Transport Canada Type Certification in place, the 16-passenger Global 5500 and 17-passenger 6500 are on schedule to enter service yet this year, Bombardier says. David Coleal, Bombardier Aviation president, says Bombardier meeting its commitments for the jets on schedule demonstrates “the ingenuity, skill, rigor, and consummate professionalism” inherent with Bombardier’s team members.
The flight test program Bombardier conducted for the 5500 and 6500 at its Wichita, Kansas, test center put the jets’ new Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine through its paces. Bombardier says Rolls-Royce custom-designed the engine with such innovative technologies as enhanced aerodynamics, blade cooling, and advanced engine health monitoring systems. The engine, along with an advanced wing design and integrated system redundancy, enable the jets to provide “superior safety,” Bombardier says.
Nuage Seating & More
The new Global jets feature Bombardier’s Vision Flight Deck, and will debut Bombardier’s Nuage chaise seating. Designed for long-range flights, Nuage adds “new dimensions to the conference suite as a lounge chair that converts into a flat surface for sleeping or banquet-style dining around the table,” Bombardier says. Performance-wise, the Global 5500 has a 5,700-nautical-mile (10,566-kilometer) range, and the 6500 a 6,600-nautical-mile (12,223-kilometer) range. The additional range the jets provide over their Global 5000 and 6000 siblings and their up-to-13% fuel burn advantage contribute to “highly favorable operating costs vs. smaller competing aircraft with less range,” Bombardier notes.
