Business jet manufacturer Gulfstream recently picked up a 2019 Sustainability Leadership Award from the Business Intelligence Group for the company’s various SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) efforts. The aerospace company has been working with SAF since 2011, when a Gulfstream G450 became the first business jet to traverse the Atlantic Ocean using the eco-friendlier fuel. Since then, Gulfstream says, it has become “the first business jet manufacturer with a dedicated supply of SAF, and the first to offer the fuel to customers.”
Essential To Business Operations
The Sustainability Leadership Award is awarded to organizations that “make sustainability an essential part of their business operations.” Gulfstream’s other SAF-related initiatives include inking an agreement with World Fuel Services in 2015 to supply Gulfstream with SAF for its daily operations out of its headquarters in Savannah, Georgia.
Gulfstream has specifically used a 30/70 blend of low-carbon, drop-in SAF with Jet-A fuel on corporate, demonstration, customer support, and flight test operations, flying nearly 830,000 nautical miles (upward of 1.5 million kilometers) total and saving more than 1,047 tons (950-plus metric tons) of carbon dioxide. Further, Gulfstream began offering customers access to SAF early this year from its Long Beach, California, facility, making it the first business jet OEM to do so, Gulfstream says. The company uses SAF itself for Completions flights out of the facility.
Emissions Reductions
Gulfstream notes that its SAF supply is “chemically equivalent to conventional Jet-A” and provides identical performance and safety standards. With every SAF gallon burned, a 50%-plus reduction in greenhouse gas emission occurs as compared to petroleum-based jet fuel on a lifecycle basis, Gulfstream says.
