Gulfstream Aerospace now has two company-owned MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facilities in Southern California after opening a new service center at the Van Nuys Airport in mid-December. Noting that Southern California is one of the world’s busiest corridors for Gulfstream business jets, Gulfstream says the new facility will provide SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) and ample ramp space, as well as serve as a local operating base for its FAST (Field and Airborne Support Teams) rapid-response unit that services grounded aircraft. The business jet manufacturer also owns and operates the Gulfstream Long Beach service center and completions facility roughly 45 miles away.
“Prime Location”
Gulfstream has 130-plus Gulfstream aircraft based at the Van Nuys Airport, which it describes as “the most active business aviation airport in California.” At about 66,000 square feet, the Van Nuys facility features roughly 43,000 square feet of hangar space—enough to accommodate four Gulfstream G650ER jets or four Gulfstream G650s. Next to the facility is a FBO that Gulfstream’s sister company, Jet Aviation, operates, complete with a 10,000-square-foot (929-square-meter) terminal and 43,000 square feet (3,995 square meters) of hangar and office space. The Van Nuys facility also offers easy access to Gulfstream’s West Coast Customer Support Distribution Center at the airport that houses nearly $30 million in parts and materials.
Gulfstream Customer Support President Derek Zimmerman says Los Angeles County is an especially “prime location” for Gulfstream business jets. With facilities in both Van Nuys and Long Beach, he says, Gulfstream can serve customers based in the region or who are transitioning through. “This expansion ensures our new aircraft, the Gulfstream G500 and G600, and the rest of our growing fleet continue to have the best service and support in business aviation,” Zimmerman says.
Three & Counting
The Van Nuys facility is the third maintenance facility Gulfstream has opened in the past five months, joining service center expansions in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Savannah, Georgia. Next year, Gulfstream will open newly built service centers in Palm Beach, Florida, and Farnborough, England, leaving its five new maintenance facilities with more than 790,000 square feet (73,393 square meters) of combined space.
