Storied sports car designer and manufacturer Porsche is seeking to move past the normal scope of its operations, and it’s calling upon aerospace giant Boeing to do so. In mid-October, the companies announced they’ve signed a memorandum of understanding “to explore the premium urban air mobile market and the extension of urban traffic into airspace.” Detlev von Platen, Porsche sales and marketing executive board member, says Porsche transitioning into a leading brand for premium mobility could eventually lead it into a “third dimension of travel.”
Prototype Planned
Through the partnership, Porsche and Boeing will study the future of premium personal urban air mobile vehicles and will create an international team focused on different facets of urban air mobility. Further, Boeing’s Aurora Flight Sciences subsidiary will pitch in to help develop a “fully electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle.” Porsche’s own Porsche Engineering Services and Studio F.A. Porsche subsidiaries will help implement and test a prototype.
Steve Nordlund, Boeing NeXt vice president and general manager, says the Boeing-Porsche collaboration builds on Boeing NeXt’s efforts to develop a safe, efficient new mobility ecosystem and enables it to investigate the development of a premium urban air mobility vehicle with a leading automotive brand.
2025 & Beyond
Porsche cites a 2018 study from Porsche Consulting that projects the urban air mobility market will pick up steam after 2025. The study also predicts urban air mobility solutions will transport passengers faster, more efficiently, at a lower cost, and with greater flexibility compared to today’s conventional terrestrial transport methods.
