India airline IndiGo recently received the 1,000th aircraft from Airbus’ A320neo lineup of commercial jets. Airbus assembled this particular A321neo model at its facility in Hamburg, Germany. Airbus claims IndiGo is both its biggest customer for A320neo family aircraft (with 430 firm orders placed) and the largest A320neo fleet operator (with 96 aircraft). IndiGo also operates 129 A320 aircraft.
Achieving Milestones
In addition to manufacturing aircraft in Hamburg, Airbus assembles A320neo family aircraft at facilities in France, China, and the United States. Airbus delivered its first A320neo airplane in January 2016. Each year since, Airbus says, the program has achieved new milestones. These include the first A321neo delivery in 2017, the first A321LR (Long Range) delivery in 2018, and the launch of the A321XLR (Xtra Long Range) earlier this year.
The A320, perched at the top of the list of Airbus’s most popular aircraft ever (per the company), is available in original and newer A320neo versions. The newer version features Sharklet wingtip devices and options for Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1100G-JM or CFM International LEAP-1A engines. Airbus says it designed the A320neo program with fuel efficiency in mind, and claims the aircraft delivers 20% less fuel burn and 50% less noise compared to the previous generation.
