General Dynamics subsidiary Gulfstream Aerospace has delivered its first G600 aircraft, roughly a month after the business jet received both its type and production certifications from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) on the same day. The new long-range, 19-passenger G600 went to an undisclosed U.S. customer; the delivery took place at Gulfstream’s headquarters in Savannah, Georgia.
The Road To Delivery
Gulfstream introduced the G600 and G500 simultaneously in 2014 and delivered the first G500 in September. (The G500 also received its FAA type and production certifications on the same day.) Both aircraft went underwent an intensive test flight campaign, with Gulfstream claiming the G600 spent 100,000 hours in its labs and 3,200-plus hours flying in the air.
“We always strive to exceed our customers’ expectations, and our first G600 delivery is a prime example of that,” says Gulfstream President Mark Burns. “The effort put forth by our team enabled this award-winning, technologically advanced aircraft to move from certified to delivered in an extremely short period of time.”
Billed as the longest business jet in its class, the 45.2-foot (13.77-meter) G600 was to enter service in January, but Gulfstream delayed the date, reportedly due to the partial U.S. government shutdown that was in effect at the time. Prior to the delay, Gulfstream extended the G600’s flight range two times during the test flight campaign, eventually reaching the current 6,500-nautical mile (12,038-kilometer) range with eight passengers flying at Mach 0.85. The jet can also fly 5,500 nautical miles (10,186 kilometers) at a Mach 0.90 cruise speed, and can reach a top operating speed of Mach 0.925.
Going The Distance
In addition to winning several industry-related awards for its interior and technology implementations, including the Symmetry Flight Deck featuring active control sidesticks and 10 touchscreens, the G600 has set 10-plus city-pair speed records to date. Gulfstream says the aircraft can fly nonstop from Paris to Los Angeles or Hong Kong with passengers onboard at an average speed of Mach 0.90.
